RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for hospital pharmacists and physician hospitalists involved in the care of patients in the hospital setting.

The goal of this activity is to examine the pharmacologic characteristics of traditional anticoagulants and discuss the potential role of newer agents for the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE), with a focus on differentiating the various anticoagulants for medical patients at risk for VTE.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this educational activity and the post-test, participants should be able to:
• Discuss the different pharmacologic properties and clinical utility of new and emerging anticoagulant agents for VTE prophylaxis
• Explain the pharmacologic characteristics of traditional anticoagulants and compare these to new and emerging agents
• Differentiate the clinical situations and potential patient characteristics in which different anticoagulant therapies would be used
• Discuss the potential role of newer agents for VTE prevention
