Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant problem in patients with acute ischemic stroke and accounts for a high proportion of deaths among stroke patients. In this Update, Farzeneh Sorond, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Harvard School of Medicine/ Brigham & Women’s Hospital, discusses the prevention of VTE in stroke patients, reviewing the evidence for the efficacy and safety of antiplatelet agents, anticoagulant agents, and mechanical methods for thromboprophylaxis.
