INTENDED AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for general and specialized surgeons, critical care physicians, oncologists, general practice physicians and healthcare providers who are involved with special patient populations who may be at increased risk for thromboembolic complications.

GOAL OF THE ACTIVITY

To familiarize participants with antithrombotic therapy considerations – particularly in terms of LMWHs - relevant to obese patients and patients with impaired renal function, as well as to provide clinicians with practical treatment recommendations for effective thrombosis management of these difficult-to-treat patient populations.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of actual body weight (ABW) on dosing and anti-Xa levels
  • Describe the impact of renal dysfunction levels of LMWHs on the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of LMWHs
  • Recognize the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic differences occurring in patients requiring antithrombotic medications who are obese or have renal impairment
  • Utilize updated information as a guide for consideration of dosage adjustments compatible with physiological changes in patients who are obese or have renal impairment
  • Identify the differences in monitoring antithrombotic medication effects and the rationale for outpatient antithrombosis management
