The participants will be able to describe which surgical patients should be prophylaxed to prevent VTE and which forms of anticoagulation should be used.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to

  • Recognize and list which surgical procedures place patients at risk for VTE
  • Determine whether a patient that undergoes a surgical procedure needs thromboprophylaxis
  • Utilize thromboprophylaxis appropriately, which may lead to a decrease in preventable death in surgical patients
