ThrombosisClinic.com encourages stroke awareness initiatives to continue beyond May
May 2005 - May has been designated Stroke Awareness Month. "But," says Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, Director, Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, and co-chair of the TRACK (Thrombosis Resource for the Advancement of Clinical Knowledge) Advisory Council, "we should not stop at the end of May. Initiatives designed to create greater awareness of the risk factors for stroke must continue."
ThrombosisClinic.com - an online educational resource focusing on thrombosis and developed under the guidance of the TRACK Advisory Council - is helping to educate physicians and other healthcare professionals about the importance of thrombosis as the underlying cause of ischemic stroke and preventing recurrent events such as stroke and myocardial infarction in these patients.
"There is a direct relationship between stroke and patients with thrombotic disease," Dr Bhatt continued. "For this reason, ThrombosisClinic.com is encouraging increased awareness for patients at risk of stroke."
Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US and a leading cause of disability. Each year 700,000 people experience a stroke, with 200,000 of these being recurrent. Of all strokes, 88% are ischemic in nature. Approximately $56.8 billion direct and indirect costs of stroke are estimated in the US in 2005 (35 for direct and 21.8 for indirect).1
Geno J. Merli, MD, Director, Division of Internal Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University and co-chair of the TRACK Advisory Board along with Dr Bhatt, agrees. "We have the ability to provide educational materials to our colleagues through ThrombosisClinic.com, and we invite you to log on and take advantage of this valuable initiative." It is important that healthcare providers remain abreast of the latest findings in the diagnosis and management of thrombosis and all of its clinical manifestations. "Ongoing education is essential if we are to be able to provide optimal prevention and care for our patients, "Dr Merli concluded.
