March is DVT Awareness Month!   Printer-friendly version

ThrombosisClinic.com joins national campaign to help raise awareness of a serious yet preventable illness

March, 2005 - ThrombosisClinic.com announces its support for Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Awareness Month, a public health campaign aimed at raising awareness of this commonly occurring medical condition and its potentially fatal complication, pulmonary embolism (PE).

On March 2, 2005, with unanimous consent, US Senate Co-sponsors Arlen Specter and Byron Dorgan moved to raise public awareness of DVT - a condition that affects up to 2 million American families annually, according to the American Heart Association. “This little-known condition hospitalizes up to 600,000 people each year, causing additional healthcare costs of more than $20,000 per person, per case,” said Senator Byron Dorgan, chair of the Congressional Heart and Stroke Coalition. “If we are able to raise awareness, we’ll save healthcare costs, but more importantly, we’ll save lives.” This resolution advances the mission of the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis.

According to a national survey sponsored by the American Public Health Association, most Americans (74%) have little or no awareness of DVT. Of those who develop PE, up to 200,000 people will die each year, which is more than from breast cancer and AIDS combined.

“It will take all our collective efforts to continue to raise the level of awareness about this common yet preventable condition. The [Senate] resolution… is a broad step towards our goal,” says Geno J. Merli, MD, Director, Division of Internal Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University and cochair of ThrombosisClinic.com.

About the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis
More than 35 organizations have joined the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis. The coalition is comprised of national thought leaders and representatives from key organizations, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Public Health Association, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. The coalition objectives include: the need to reduce the risk of DVT; the actions to help achieve better diagnosis; the steps required to reduce DVT prevalence and incidence, and the ways to inspire government, healthcare leaders, and policy makers to make DVT a national healthcare priority.

ThrombosisClinic.com is a complete online thrombosis healthcare resource that offers: the latest information on patient management, valuable thrombosis management tools, breaking medical news updated daily, and complimentary CME programs. According to Deepak Bhatt, MD, Director, Interventional Cardiology Fellowship, Cleveland Clinic Heart Center and cochair of the program with Dr. Merli, “ThrombosisClinic.com is helping to educate physicians and other healthcare professionals about the importance of thrombosis, including DVT and PE.”
