Treatment of Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction in the Emergency Medicine Department
James W. Hoekstra, MD
James W. Hoekstra, MD, reviews the case of a 75-year-old woman admitted to the emergency medicine department with chest tightness and sweatiness lasting approximately 1 hour. The patient had a history of stroke and hypertension, and she was being treated with aspirin and an antihypertensive drug. In this case-study presentation, Dr Hoekstra discusses the usefulness of risk-stratification tools—such as the TIMI risk score—as a basis for therapeutic decision making and the recommended treatment options based on the current American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association treatment guidelines.
After reading the case study presentation and completing the posttest and evaluation form, the participant should be able to
- Risk stratify for acute coronary syndrome
- Implement a protocol for the diagnosis of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction vs ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
- Explain the rationale for hospital treatment guidelines in patients with unstable angina/non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
This program is supported by an educational grant from sanofi-aventis U.S.
