Acute Venous Thromboembolism in the Emergency Department
Deborah B. Diercks, MD

Deborah B. Diercks, MD, reviews the case of a 77-year-old female who presents with chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient has a medical history of heart failure and coronary artery disease. In this case-study presentation, Dr Diercks discusses the risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE), the current guidelines from the American College of Chest Physicians, the recommended treatment options, and the importance of long-term VTE prophylaxis in hospitalized patients.

  • After following the case-study presentation and completing the posttest and evaluation form, the participant should be able to:
  • Recognize the risk factors for VTE
  • Assess multiple variables in the presentation of VTE
  • Make a differential diagnosis
  • List the current recommendations for the treatment of acute VTE and the prevention of recurrent VTE
