Acute Venous Thromboembolism in the Emergency Department

Deborah B. Diercks, MD, reviews the case of a 77-year-old female who presents with chest pain and shortness of breath. The patient has a medical history of heart failure and coronary artery disease. In this case-study presentation, Dr Diercks discusses the risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE), the current guidelines from the American College of Chest Physicians, the recommended treatment options, and the importance of long-term VTE prophylaxis in hospitalized patients.
